Macromastia is the medical term for large breasts, and it can either be symptomatic or asymptomatic. When it is symptomatic, women may have chronic pain in one or more of areas of their body, including the neck, shoulders, back, chest, and even tingling sensations in the hands.
Reduction mammaplasty is a cosmetic surgery that reduces the size of the breasts, and in turn, decreases symptoms of pain. In particular, the procedure removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and aligns the breast in size with proportion of the rest of
your body.
The most common method of breast reduction involves three incisions. Around the areola, one incision is made. Another runs vertically from the areola's bottom edge to the crease beneath the breast. The third incision is made along the natural curve of the breast crease. The nipple and areola are raised after the surgeon has removed excess breast tissue, fat, and skin.
Following breast reduction, a wound dressing and bandage will be applied. An elastic bandage or support bra will be recommended to reduce swelling and support the breast as it heals. A breast reduction most often can be conducted as an outpatient procedure and does not require an overnight hospital stay, most patients are sent home the same day after surgery. However it is highly advisable to avoid lifting heavy objects or do strenuous workout for 3 to 4 weeks or more.
